French Balconies Made of Galvanized Steel: Safety Meets Facade Design
A French balcony primarily serves as fall protection for floor-to-ceiling windows and doors on upper floors. Beyond its essential safety function, it acts as a striking design element that significantly enhances the visual appeal of a building's facade. Kirchberger Metall's galvanized steel constructions offer an ideal combination of structural robustness, long-lasting corrosion protection, and aesthetic flexibility. These fall protection systems can be precisely adapted to the architectural style of any building and provide a timeless, metallic look.
The Hot-Dip Galvanization Process: Comprehensive Technical Protection
To permanently protect steel against corrosion, we use the hot-dip galvanization process. The finished component, after thorough chemical pre-cleaning, is immersed in a bath of molten zinc at a temperature of approx. 450 °C. Unlike simple coatings, this process creates an inseparable metallurgical bond between the zinc and the steel. This ensures that even hard-to-reach areas, welds, and cavities are completely covered, creating an extremely durable protective layer.
Material Advantages: Why Galvanized Steel is the Optimal Choice
Since French balconies are constantly exposed to the elements, this protection against oxidation is crucial. Hot-dip galvanization offers specific technical advantages:
- Decades of Corrosion Protection: The zinc layer reliably protects the steel from rust for many years, even under harsh environmental conditions.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Galvanized steel is a cost-effective solution compared to stainless steel, without compromising structural safety.
- Self-Healing Effect (Cathodic Protection): A special advantage is the reaction of zinc as a sacrificial anode. Small scratches or mechanical damage do not immediately lead to rust, as the surrounding zinc layer chemically protects the exposed steel.
- High Mechanical Load Capacity: The alloyed surface is extremely hard and resistant to impact or abrasion during assembly and use.
Mounting Options: Face-Mounted or Recessed
For the professional installation of fall protection systems, there are two primary technical approaches, chosen depending on the structural situation:
- Face-Mounted Installation: The railing is attached parallel to the facade with a defined distance directly to the masonry. This is the most common method for a striking visual presence.
- Recessed Installation: The balcony is anchored within the wall opening (reveal) on the left and right walls that frame the window. This variant often appears more discreet and integrated.
Important for safety is the use of officially approved fasteners that are precisely matched to the respective anchoring substrate (e.g., concrete or brick) to ensure long-term load-bearing capacity.
Versatility and Individual Customization
Every construction project has its own dimensional requirements. Kirchberger Metall therefore offers French balconies in individual lengths. In addition to classic bar components, the range also includes modern variants such as models with laser-cut designs.
