Patio Roofs: Extended Functionality and Weather Protection for Outdoor Areas

A patio roof serves as a technical solution to make outdoor spaces usable regardless of changing weather conditions. Kirchberger Metall's systems offer effective protection against precipitation, wind, and direct sunlight, allowing the patio to function as an extended living space. The use of high-quality metal constructions and certified glass elements ensures lasting stability, capable of withstanding extreme loads such as snow loads or hail. The entire process, from conception and design to manufacturing, takes place in Germany.

Material Properties: Steel and Aluminum Compared

The structural framework is made from materials with high torsional rigidity and corrosion resistance. Depending on the structural requirements and desired aesthetics, two material options are available:

  • Hot-dip Galvanized Steel:This material offers superior load-bearing capacity, which is particularly advantageous for large spans and areas with high snow loads. Hot-dip galvanization provides permanent corrosion protection, which can be further customized with an additional powder coating in any desired RAL color.
  • Aluminum Profiles:Aluminum is characterized by its low weight and high resistance to atmospheric influences. The profiles are low-maintenance and can be precisely processed, supporting a clean and modern aesthetic for the overall structure.

Glass Technology: Laminated Safety Glass (LSG)

For the roofing and optional side panels, Kirchberger Metall exclusively uses laminated safety glass (LSG). This glass consists of at least two panes of glass bonded together by a tear-resistant, double PVB film. This construction ensures that if the glass is mechanically damaged, it does not shatter, but rather the fragments adhere to the film. LSG also offers sufficient resistance to falling branches and extreme weather events such as heavy rain or hail.

Mounting Options: Wall-mounted or Freestanding Construction

The structural integration of the patio roof can be done in two different ways, depending on the existing building structure:

  • Wall Mounting:If solid masonry is present, the roof is anchored to the building on one side. This creates a seamless transition between the interior and the patio and saves space in the passageway.
  • Freestanding Solution:This construction is independent of the house wall and can be positioned anywhere on the property. It is particularly suitable for locations where the facade's structural integrity does not allow direct attachment or where placement in the garden is desired.

Roof Shapes and Optional Features

Regarding roof shape, classic flat roofsand single-sloped lean-to roofsare available. The lean-to roof's slope promotes the natural drainage of rainwater and self-cleaning of the glass surfaces. To optimize thermal comfort under the roof, the systems can be combined with suitable shading systems. These accessory elements protect against overheating and glare from direct sunlight. The powder coating of the metal parts in the entire RAL color palette also allows for precise coordination with existing window frames or the house's facade color.

Comprehensive Manufacturing Service

Kirchberger Metall offers project management from a single source. After technical planning and 3D sketch creation, professional manufacturing takes place in our own production facilities. Delivery and installation are carried out by trained specialists to ensure structurally sound anchoring and standard-compliant installation of the glass elements. This guarantees high quality and durability of the entire patio roof.

Questions and Answers

The rain gutter is often seamlessly integrated into the front load-bearing profile (box gutter). From there, the water runs completely out of sight through the hollow interior of a support post down into the drain.

• Never step directly onto glass or multiwall polycarbonate panels!
• Clean the surfaces from a secure ladder using a telescopic pole and water.

The roof's structural design must be matched exactly to the local snow load zone (usually 1 to 3 in Germany). The construction must safely bear the weight of wet snow (often over 1.0 kN/m²) without collapsing. We plan your patio canopy precisely according to your conditions and needs.

This depends on the structural capacity of the load-bearing front gutter profile. By inserting an invisible steel core into the aluminum gutter, spans of up to 5 or 6 meters can be achieved without a center support post.

An on-glass awning reflects the sun's heat before it penetrates the glass, providing better heat protection. An under-glass awning offers less protection against heat build-up, but is completely sheltered from the weather and does not get dirty.

The threshold for permit-free construction differs by federal state (state building code). As a rule, patio roofs with a floor area of up to 30 square meters or a depth of up to 3 meters may be erected without a formal building application.
