Bicycle parking systems: Infrastructure for sustainable mobility concepts

Providing secure and functional bicycle parking is a key component of modern urban planning. Stationary bicycle parking systems encourage the switch to cycling, relieve congestion on roads, and efficiently organize public and private space. Kirchberger Metall's systems are designed for heavy use in urban areas, at company locations, educational institutions, and residential complexes. They offer orderly parking and, through mechanical barriers, significantly contribute to theft prevention.

Types of bicycle racks and their areas of application

Depending on the location requirements and available space, different construction types are used:

  • Leaning rail (bicycle rail):These are considered standard for public and commercial areas. They allow for secure locking of the frame and are independent of tire width, making them suitable for mountain bikes with wide tires or e-bikes.
  • Row bicycle racks (bicycle parking):These systems allow for the storage of a large number of bicycles in a limited space. The staggered positioning of the wheel holders prevents the handlebars from interlocking and maximizes parking space density.
  • Double-decker parking:For locations with extremely limited floor space, double-decker parking systems offer a vertical expansion of parking capacity, which is particularly advantageous at transport hubs such as train stations.
  • Wall parking:This space-saving solution is mounted directly on building walls and is particularly suitable for narrow passageways or garages.

Technical specifications and material quality

The longevity of an outdoor bicycle rack is largely determined by the choice of materials. Predominantly corrosion-resistant materials are used:

  • Galvanized steel:Hot-dip galvanizing according to DIN EN ISO 1461 offers robust protection against mechanical stresses and weathering.
  • Powder-coated steel/aluminum:This surface finish allows for color design according to RAL Classic specifications and offers additional chemical protection.
  • Stainless steel:Ensures a high-quality appearance with maximum corrosion resistance and minimal maintenance.

Planning specifications: Spacing and ergonomics

For safe and comfortable use, certain minimum dimensions must be observed during planning. The wheelbase between two parking spaces should be at least 50 cm, with a distance of 70 to 80 cm considered ideal to prevent damage to the vehicles when parking and unparking. Additional technical features such as integrated anti-roll bars or anti-roll devices increase functionality and protect the bicycle's paintwork.

Fasteners and mounting

The stability of a bicycle rack depends on its anchoring in the ground. Three primary mounting methods are distinguished:

  • Floor mounting (bolting on):The system is screwed directly to the load-bearing substrate using base plates.
  • Concreting in:The extension of the posts is embedded in a point foundation provided by the building contractor, which offers the highest level of security against vandalism and unauthorized dismantling.
  • Wall mounting:The fixtures are attached directly to the masonry using heavy-duty anchors to keep the floor area clear.

Scooter parking: Organizational systems for micromobility

With the increasing prevalence of e-scooters and kick scooters, the need for specialized parking solutions is growing.Scooter parkingThese compact scooter racks allow for the orderly parking of these small vehicles and prevent sidewalks or entrances from being blocked by loosely parked scooters. These systems feature integrated eyelets or recesses that allow the scooter to be secured with chain or U-locks. Their small footprint makes them ideal for integrating into existing bicycle parking facilities or positioning in functional niches on company and school grounds.

Expansion through e-bike charging stations

With the increasing popularity of electric bicycles, the integration of charging infrastructure is gaining importance. E-bike charging stations combine secure parking with the ability to charge batteries directly at the parking space. These systems are optimized for use in municipalities and on company premises and provide the necessary energy basis for promoting electromobility in local transport. The technical design takes into account the necessary protection ratings for electrical operation outdoors.
