A place to wait or to take a break needs three things: a roof that stays watertight, walls that take away the wind without taking away the view, and seating that will still hold in ten years’ time. This unit of the type WSM Köln K2 c/b brings all three – and cuts the same figure as a waiting shelter, bus shelter, smoking shelter, bike canopy or bin storage.

The detail you only notice on second glance: there is no downpipe. The roof water drains off through a scupper on the rear corner post. That is why the unit looks equally clean from all four sides – and there is no pipe that something can tear off when it is bumped into.
Finish and cladding
The frame is hot-dip galvanized, primed and colour-coated in RAL 7016 anthracite grey. This build-up corresponds to corrosivity category C4 medium based on DIN EN ISO 12944-2 – the category for industrial atmospheres and coastal locations. For a unit that stands outdoors all year round and regularly gets road salt on it, that is the sensible choice.
It is clad with toughened safety glass (ESG) with ceramic screen printing. The horizontal stripe motif takes away the view into the space at seat height, but lets through enough light that the interior does not become gloomy. If you prefer a closed build, perforated aluminium sheet in the frame colour or wooden cladding in Douglas fir are available instead of glass.
Equipment
The unit was delivered including a corner bench and a wall-mounted ashtray.

- Lighting in the roof: the InLight system with presence detector, integrated into the roof structure and vandal-proof
- VersoVolt photovoltaic system: supplies the lighting independently – no excavation work for a power connection is then needed at the installation site
- Green roof: modular sedum units that can be fitted into the trapezoidal profile
Also as a bus shelter
The same unit is suitable as a bus shelter. What counts there is rarely the looks, but whether it can be approved and what it costs to maintain over the years. A type-tested structural analysis is available for the structure, it is approved nationwide for wind load zones I to III, and the lighting sits vandal-proof inside the roof structure.
One point that is regularly overlooked at bus stops: anchoring into paved or asphalt surfaces is not permitted. Where the waiting area is paved, a foundation belongs underneath – or the ready-made concrete foundation slab, which is set at ground level into a sand or gravel bed prepared on site and saves elaborate foundation work.
Structural analysis, foundation and installation
The unit is designed for a snow load of Sk = 1.90 kN/m² (as a kit, Sk = 1.45 kN/m²).
The foundations are to be provided on site according to our specifications; we supply the foundation plan with the order confirmation. The design assumes normal ground conditions, the drilling depth is at least 100 mm, and the area of the floor anchoring must be free of utility lines. The foundations must be level, with a maximum permissible height difference of ± 5 mm.
The unit is manufactured at WSM. From us come the planning, the coordination of the specification as well as delivery, unloading and installation – on this project including the floor anchoring. If you would rather set the unit up yourself, you receive it as a kit with assembly instructions; that is also the solution when the access is too narrow for a crane truck.
