Stainless steel material, V2A, V4A - differences and distinction from inferior quality from the Far East

Stainless steel material - What should you know about it & how can you recognize quality?

Not all stainless steel is created equal. Especially with railings , roofs , balconies , canopies , or other exterior structures, the right type of stainless steel determines lifespan , safety , and value retention .

Unfortunately, the market is increasingly using inferior qualities that may look similar, but corrode faster technically.

Our quality promise at Kirchberger Metall:
We exclusively process certified stainless steels V2A and V4Awith material certificates . No mixed grades, no cheap alloys, full traceability.

V2A – proven stainless steel for indoor & outdoor use

Composition: 16-18% chromium, 8-10% nickel

V2A (e.g., material number 1.4301 ) is the most well-known stainless steel in metal construction. It is distinguished by its good corrosion resistance and very good workability.

  • Good corrosion resistance under normal stress
  • Very weldable and malleable

V4A – the stainless steel for demanding environments (coastal areas, industry, swimming pools)

Composition: 16–18% chromium, 10–13% nickel + 2–2.5% molybdenum

V4A (e.g., 1.4404 ) additionally contains molybdenum . This makes it significantly more resistant to chlorides, moisture, and sea/road salt.

The correct surface treatment and (K320 grinding at Kirchberger Metall) further enhances the surface and protects it from corrosion.

The problem in the market:

The term "stainless steel" is not a mark of quality.

Many inexpensive railings or kits are sold as "stainless steel" without a clear material specification or proof of origin. Often, the material number , material test certificate , and traceable origin are missing. This can lead to rust, corrosion at welds, or unsightly brown streaks.

Inferior stainless steels imported from the Far East

(Typical for cheap railings, marketplace offers or no-name kits.)

201 / 202 Stainless steel (common problem cases)

These grades are often characterized by a significant reduction in nickel content , which is replaced by other elements (e.g., manganese and nitrogen ). Visually, they often resemble V2A stainless steel, but are technically far less corrosion-resistant – especially outdoors.

  • Prone to corrosion after just a few months outdoors
  • Visually like V2A – technically significantly inferior
  • Often unsuitable/not compliant with standards for construction products in Europe

Typical problems:

  • brown rust streaks
  • Pitting corrosion
  • Rust on weld seams
  • "rusts despite stainless steel"

“304 look alike” / fake V2A

Materials labeled "304" or "V2A" are sometimes offered that lack clear material identification and verifiable certification (e.g., according to EN 10088 ). Often, a material certificate according to EN 10204 (3.1) is missing. The risks include inconsistent quality, mixed melts, and a high risk of liability and claims.

  • No clear material identification
  • No verifiable certification
  • Often without material certificate 3.1
  • Fluctuating quality & higher risk of complaints

Conclusion: Quality that you can not only see, but also prove.

If you value honest material specifications , certified stainless steels and verifiable quality , Kirchberger Metall is the right place for you.
